University Grants Commission Flags 32 Fake Universities Across India, Issues Student Alert

UGC has identified 32 fake universities across 12 states and warned students against taking admission in unauthorised institutions. No fake university has been reported in Odisha.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a list of 32 fake universities operating across 12 states in India, raising serious concerns about student safety and the credibility of higher education. These institutions are not recognised under the UGC Act and do not have the legal authority to award valid degrees.

The number of fake universities has increased significantly from 20 to 32 in the past two years. Delhi has the highest number, with 12 such institutions, followed by states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and others.

The UGC also specifically warned about Global Human Peace University in Bengaluru, stating that it is not authorised to function as a university. Other flagged institutions include Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth and the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine.

The commission clarified that no fake universities have been identified in Odisha. Students and parents have been advised to verify university recognition through the official UGC website before taking admission.

Experts warn that fake universities often attract students with promises of quick degrees, low fees, and flexible courses. However, degrees from such institutions are invalid for jobs, higher education, or government services.
