As tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, the United States carried out a test launch of its nuclear-capable Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, often referred to as the “doomsday missile.” The launch took place on Tuesday night from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
According to the United States Space Force, the missile was unarmed and equipped with two test re-entry vehicles. Identified as test vehicle GT-255, the launch was part of a routine programme designed to evaluate the reliability and readiness of the country’s land-based nuclear deterrent.
The missile travelled thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean before striking its designated impact zone near the Marshall Islands. Officials said the test allowed engineers to study the performance of individual components and enhance the effectiveness of the overall missile system.
The Minuteman III is a key component of the US nuclear triad and has a range of about 6,000 miles. It can travel at speeds exceeding 15,000 miles per hour, enabling it to reach targets across continents within minutes.
The missile is nicknamed the “doomsday missile” because it is capable of carrying nuclear warheads up to 20 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped during the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Its solid-fuel design allows it to remain on high alert and be launched quickly from underground silos.
