Union Cabinet May Approve Renaming Kerala to “Keralam” Ahead of Assembly Elections

The Union Cabinet is set to consider a bill to rename Kerala as “Keralam,” following the state assembly’s resolution for official recognition of the local name. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the change reflects historical roots and aligns with Malayalam usage.

The Union Cabinet is expected to deliberate on a proposal to rename the state of Kerala as “Keralam,” a move recommended by the state legislative assembly ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The decision comes just a month before the polls and will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting held at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new office at Seva Tirtha.

The Kerala Assembly passed the resolution, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, highlighting that “Keralam” reflects the state’s local language, historical identity, and aspirations of a united Malayalam-speaking region from the pre-independence era. The resolution requests the central government to amend the constitutional listing in the First Schedule under Article 3 and update all official references across languages in the Eighth Schedule.

This step seeks to ensure consistency in the state’s nomenclature and strengthen the cultural and linguistic representation of Kerala at the national level.
