Washington/London:US PresidentDonald Trumphas intensified his criticism ofUK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of failing to support the United States during the early stages of the ongoing conflict withIran.
Trump’s remarks came after reports that theUnited Kingdomwas considering deploying two aircraft carriers to theMiddle Eastamid rising tensions linked to the US-Israel military campaign against Iran.
However, Trump said the deployment was unnecessary and claimed the United States did not require British support to achieve victory in the conflict.
In a post on his social media platformTruth Social, Trump said the United States would remember Britain’s decision not to allow American forces to use British bases during the initial phase of strikes against Iran.
He wrote that although the UK was now considering sending aircraft carriers to the region, American forces no longer needed such assistance.
“We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won,” Trump said in his statement.
The disagreement between Washington and London began after the British government initiallyblocked the use of UK military basesfor early US operations against Iranian targets.
Prime MinisterKeir Starmerdefended the decision, stating that he wanted to ensure any military action waslegal, carefully planned, and justifiedbefore allowing British involvement.
Later, the UK government permitted US forces to use British bases for what it described asdefensive operations targeting Iranian missile facilities.
The controversy comes after Britain’sMinistry of Defenceannounced preparations for the potential deployment of theHMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrierto the Middle East.
However, officials saidno final decisionhas been taken regarding whether the carrier will actually be deployed.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Starmer in recent days, suggesting that the British Prime Minister’s decisions have damaged the traditionally close relationship between theUnited States and the United Kingdom.
Earlier this week, Trump also compared Starmer unfavourably to wartime British leaderWinston Churchillduring a meeting at the White House with German ChancellorFriedrich Merz.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between the two allies as the conflict involving theUS, Israel, and Irancontinues to escalate.
