A routine aerial display at the internationally-acclaimed Dubai Air Show turned into a moment of alarm after an Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet crashed during a demonstration on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 2:10 pm local time, sending a plume of thick black smoke over Al Maktoum International Airport, where thousands had gathered to witness the biennial aviation event.

Uncertainty Over Pilot’s Fate

According to the Associated Press (AP), it remains unclear whether the pilot managed to eject before impact. The Tejas is equipped with a Martin-Baker zero-zero ejection seat, designed to allow pilots to escape safely even at low speeds and altitudes. As per media reports citing IAF sources, the pilot reportedly suffered fatal injuries in the mishap.

Second Tejas Crash in Two Years

This marks the second-ever crash involving a Tejas aircraft, and the second within a span of less than two years. The first incident occurred in March 2024 near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, when a Tejas fighter jet went down during an operational sortie. The pilot had successfully ejected in that case.

Crowds Witness Terrifying Descent

Visitors watching from enclosures near the runway captured videos showing the Tejas executing a demonstration manoeuvre before abruptly losing altitude. Moments later, it slammed into the ground, followed by a rising tower of smoke that prompted panic and swift movement among spectators.

A Cornerstone of India’s Air Power

The Tejas, a 4.5-generation multi-role combat aircraft, remains central to India’s efforts to modernise its fighter fleet and reduce reliance on foreign platforms. Known for its agility, compact design, and combat versatility, the aircraft has been operational since the induction of the first squadron, No. 45 ‘Flying Daggers’, in 2016.

As investigations begin, the crash casts a shadow over one of the world’s premier aviation showcases. Yet, it also underscores the high-risk nature of aerial demonstrations and the critical importance of continued advancements in aircraft safety and design.
