The International Cricket Council (ICC) has turned down the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to relocate its T20 World Cup matches from India, sources familiar with the discussions toldIndia Today. The decision was conveyed during a virtual meeting, where the ICC reportedly made it clear that Bangladesh would be required to travel to India for the tournament or face potential sporting consequences, including the loss of points.
Sources said the ICC informed the BCB that the tournament schedule and designated venues would remain unchanged, despite the concerns raised by Bangladesh. The global governing body is understood to have warned that refusing to play matches in India could result in forfeiture of points. However, BCB officials later claimed they had not received any formal communication confirming the rejection or outlining such consequences.
On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board denied reports suggesting it had been issued an ultimatum. In a statement, the BCB said the ICC had expressed its willingness to work closely with the board to address security concerns and assured that Bangladesh’s inputs would be considered as part of detailed planning for the event.
“The BCB has taken note of media reports claiming that the Board was issued an ultimatum. These claims are completely false and do not reflect the nature or substance of the communication received from the ICC,” the statement said.
The impasse follows heightened tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the BCB after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Indian Premier League. The BCCI had reportedly asked Kolkata Knight Riders to terminate his contract, citing unspecified “developments,” amid political backlash in India over reports of violence against minorities in Bangladesh.
In response, the BCB convened an emergency meeting and later approached the ICC, citing safety and security concerns for its players travelling to India for the World Cup. Bangladesh also pointed to precedent, with BCB director Faruque Ahmed referencing Pakistan’s participation in ICC events under a hybrid model as justification for their request.
As tensions escalated further, Bangladesh banned the broadcast of the upcoming IPL season in the country. Speaking earlier toIndia Today, Faruque Ahmed said political factors had contributed significantly to the worsening relationship between the two cricket boards, adding that cricketing issues had become intertwined with broader concerns.
Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman has joined the Pakistan Super League following his IPL exit. While the ICC’s stance indicates little scope for altering World Cup plans at this stage, the absence of official written communication has left some uncertainty, with the BCB yet to publicly outline its next steps.
