The Howrah–Guwahati Sleeper Vande Bharat Express, expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is poised to significantly upgrade overnight rail connectivity between eastern and northeastern India.
Tailored for long-distance night travel, the state-of-the-art train is designed to offer faster, safer and more comfortable journeys across key routes in West Bengal and Assam.
The Sleeper Vande Bharat will feature 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, comprising 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches and one first-class AC coach. With a total capacity of 823 berths, the train will accommodate 611 passengers in 3AC, 188 in 2AC and 24 in 1AC, catering to a wide range of travellers.
Built as a semi-high-speed service with a design speed of up to 180 kmph, the train is expected to operate at speeds of 120–130 kmph on the Howrah–Guwahati route. Its schedule has been planned to allow evening departures and early-morning arrivals, making it especially convenient for overnight journeys.
Passenger comfort remains a key focus, with ergonomically designed berths, superior cushioning, advanced suspension systems for smoother rides and noise-reduction technology. Safety has also been enhanced through the integration of the KAVACH automatic train protection system, CCTV surveillance, fire detection and suppression mechanisms, emergency communication systems and modern driver cab controls.
The onboard catering service will showcase regional flavours, offering Assamese cuisine on services originating from Guwahati and Bengali dishes on trains departing from Howrah. The train will also include special facilities for Divyangjan passengers, along with upgraded sanitation systems using advanced disinfectant technology.
With its modern design, upgraded amenities and competitive fare structure, the Howrah–Guwahati Sleeper Vande Bharat Express is set to redefine overnight rail travel in the region.
