The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has played down the escalating standoff with Bangladesh, maintaining that recent steps taken by Dhaka will have no meaningful impact on Indian cricket or the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The response follows Bangladesh’s decision to suspend the broadcast of IPL 2026 within the country and its request to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move its ICC T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India, with Sri Lanka suggested as an alternative venue.
A former senior BCCI official described the developments as an expected reaction rather than a serious challenge. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official dismissed concerns of long-term fallout, stating that neither the IPL nor Indian cricket stands to suffer any lasting consequences.
Calling Bangladesh’s response emotional but predictable, the official noted that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was acting within what it perceives as its rights. “Every action invites a reaction. If they felt aggrieved, a response was inevitable,” he said, adding that India’s position remains unchanged.
While the BCCI appears unfazed, the issue has added pressure on the ICC as it prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin on February 7. Bangladesh’s request to relocate its matches has introduced diplomatic sensitivities into the tournament’s planning and logistics.
Tensions between the two cricket boards intensified after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season. The move reportedly followed political pressure in India amid outrage over violent incidents involving members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
With demands mounting from Indian fans and political groups to bar Bangladeshi players from the IPL, the BCCI and KKR opted to part ways with Mustafizur. In Bangladesh, the decision was widely viewed as a slight, prompting the government and the BCB to respond with an IPL broadcast blackout and the World Cup venue shift request—steps that have since strained cricketing ties between the two neighbours.
