Supreme Court to Decide Harish Rana Passive Euthanasia Case: A Crucial Test for India’s Right to Die With Dignity

The Supreme Court is set to rule on whether life-support treatment for Harish Rana, who has been in a permanent vegetative state since 2013, can be withdrawn. The verdict could become a landmark moment in India’s debate on passive euthanasia and the right to die with dignity.

The Supreme Court of India is preparing to deliver a significant verdict in the case of Harish Rana, a Delhi resident who has been in a permanent vegetative state for over 13 years following a tragic accident in 2013. Rana suffered severe brain injuries after falling from the fourth floor of his paying guest accommodation while studying civil engineering at Chandigarh University.

Since the accident, he has remained completely dependent on medical support for breathing and nutrition. After years of treatment and little hope of recovery, his parents have approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to withdraw life-sustaining treatment through passive euthanasia.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had rejected their plea, stating that Rana was not on a mechanical ventilator and could sustain basic bodily functions with medical assistance. However, the family returned to the Supreme Court in 2025, arguing that his condition had deteriorated and that he was being kept artificially alive.

The case has revived the national debate on euthanasia and end-of-life care. India recognised passive euthanasia in the landmark Aruna Shanbaug case and later strengthened the right to die with dignity through the 2018 Common Cause vs Union of India judgment.

If the Supreme Court allows the withdrawal of treatment, Harish Rana’s case could become one of the first instances of court-approved passive euthanasia after the 2018 ruling, potentially shaping future legal and ethical discussions on end-of-life rights in India.
