The Sisir Saras Mela 2026 was inaugurated on Friday at the IDCO Exhibition Ground in Bhubaneswar, kicking off one of Odisha’s flagship fairs celebrating rural livelihoods, handicrafts, and self-help groups. Organised by the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, the nine-day event will continue until January 18.
Odisha Minister for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, Gokulananda Mallik, formally inaugurated the mela in the presence of dignitaries including Bhubaneswar MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, Mayor Sulochana Das, and ORMAS officials Dr Monica Priyadarshini and Sanjeev Kumar Singh.
This year’s edition features 340 sales stalls and 35 food stalls, with participation from artisans, producers, and self-help groups from all 30 districts of Odisha, as well as representatives from 20 other states, making it a national-level platform for traditional crafts and products.
Minister Mallik highlighted that the mela aims to showcase village culture and traditional livelihoods, from handlooms and handicrafts to local cuisine. He noted that the participation of women’s self-help groups and artisans provides opportunities for skill exchange, market exposure, and enterprise growth.
Participants praised the event for boosting rural businesses. Kabita Sabat, a women’s self-help group entrepreneur, shared that her group earned nearly Rs 12,000 on the first day by selling Sambalpuri handloom sarees and Pattachitra designs, reflecting the mela’s impact on local livelihoods.
In addition to the exhibition and sales, daily cultural programmes will be held in the evenings, enhancing the festive atmosphere for visitors throughout the event.
