Senegal clinches AFCON title with 94th-minute winner as Morocco walk out

In a dramatic AFCON final, Senegal staged a walkout but returned to the pitch to secure a last-gasp 94th-minute winner, snatching the title from Morocco in a thrilling finish.

The African Cup of Nations final on Sunday, January 18, unfolded in extraordinary drama as Senegal briefly walked off the field in protest over a penalty decision before returning to secure a thrilling victory over hosts Morocco in extra time.

Chaos erupted in the 92nd minute when Senegal thought they had scored, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul inside the Morocco box. Moments later, Morocco was awarded a penalty after Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz was brought down by El Hadji Malick Diouf. In protest, Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch, pausing the game for nearly 20 minutes until captain Sadio Mane convinced the team to return.

The penalty proved futile as Diaz attempted a panenka, only for Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to save it with ease. The deadlock persisted until the 94th minute, when Senegal midfielder Papa Gueye struck a stunning solo goal to secure the title and ignite celebrations.

Senegal claimed their second AFCON crown, while Morocco’s wait for a first title in nearly 50 years continued in a final remembered for its chaos, drama, and last-minute heroics.
