Saudi Arabia’s state oil company Aramco has shut its Ras Tanura refinery on the Gulf coast following a drone strike, according to an industry source. The strike comes amid escalating regional tensions after Tehran launched retaliatory attacks in response to US-Israeli military action against Iran.
The Ras Tanura facility, with a refining capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, is a critical hub for Saudi crude exports. Officials stated that the shutdown was a precautionary measure and that the situation remains under control.
The incident adds to a wave of attacks affecting the Gulf, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Manama, and Duqm in Oman, which has disrupted major shipping hubs and caused Brent crude futures to surge roughly 10% on Monday. Aramco has previously faced attacks, most notably in September 2019, when drone and missile strikes on the Abqaiq and Khurais plants temporarily halted over half of Saudi crude production, impacting global markets.
