Sanju Samson starred for India in their T20 World Cup 2026 clash against the West Indies in Kolkata on March 1, scoring an unbeaten 97 off 50 balls to guide India to a five-wicket victory and a semi-final berth.
The wicketkeeper-batsman had initially been on the bench during the earlier matches of the tournament, including the opening game against the USA. During this period, India captain and ICC ambassador Rohit Sharma motivated Samson, advising him not to lose heart and that his opportunity would come.
Samson credited the guidance and his own focus on basics for his turnaround. He revealed that he switched off his phone and stayed away from social media to concentrate on his game and shot selection. The strategy paid off as he made quick impacts in previous matches before his standout performance against the West Indies.
India is now set to face England in the semi-final on March 5 in Mumbai.
