Former India captain Rohit Sharma has made his intentions clear regarding his ODI future, stating that winning the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa remains his ultimate career goal. Amid growing speculation about his retirement following a modest series against New Zealand, Rohit has dismissed any immediate plans to step away from the 50-over format.

The debate intensified after young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century against South Africa sparked conversations about generational transition within the Indian team. However, Rohit emphasised his deep emotional connection with the ODI World Cup, describing it as the pinnacle of cricket during his formative years when T20 leagues did not exist.

Having led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where they narrowly lost to Australia, Rohit sees the 2027 edition as unfinished business. Determined to lift the trophy for India, he has vowed to work tirelessly and give his best to achieve World Cup glory. Rohit is set to return to ODI action during India’s England tour in July 2026 as he continues his preparation for the global event.
