Rohit Sharma, India’s most accomplished batters and a former ODI captain, recently opened up about the emotional toll of the 2023 World Cup final loss, admitting that he seriously contemplated retirement after the crushing defeat to Australia. He took Team India to the final with some good captaincy and providing handy knocks for his team.
Speaking candidly at a recent event, Rohit reflected on a period he described as one of the toughest of his career.
India entered the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad unbeaten, with Rohit leading from the front throughout the tournament. He amassed 597 runs in 11 matches at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.94, setting the tone for India’s aggressive approach. However, the final proved heartbreaking. Australia restricted India to 240 and chased the target comfortably, powered by Travis Head’s match-winning 137.
‘I Was Completely Devastated’
Rohit said the loss left him emotionally drained. Having taken over as captain in 2022, his singular focus had been to win a World Cup for India.
“Everybody was extremely disappointed. I had put everything into that World Cup, not just in the months leading up to it, but since becoming captain,” he said, adding that it took him months to recover from the shock.

The pain was so intense that Rohit admitted he briefly felt he had nothing left to give.
“At one point, I honestly felt like I didn’t want to play this sport anymore,” he said, describing the mental exhaustion that followed the defeat.
Through reflection and renewed motivation, Rohit gradually rediscovered his love for the game. That resurgence culminated in him leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, before retiring from the format.
