Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon, a leading star of the 1990s, recently shared insights into why she rejected landmark projects such asKuch Kuch Hota Haiand the iconic song ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ fromDil Se. In an interview with Zoom, she explained that her choices were driven by strategic career considerations as she sought to re-establish herself as a solo heroine after earlier successes.
Reflecting onKuch Kuch Hota Hai, directed by her close friend Karan Johar, Raveena said she could not take a second-lead role during a critical phase of her career. “It was very necessary for me to start off, even if I have five scenes and five songs, but as a solo heroine,” she said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining her leading-woman status after hits likeMohra. She acknowledged that the film worked perfectly for Rani Mukerji, who was a fresh face at the time, but it was not the right choice for her personally.
Raveena also revealed that she had to turn down the chartbuster ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ fromDil Se, despite wanting to work with director Mani Ratnam. She said, “I didn’t want to be branded ‘item girl’…these are the regrets that you do have, but then you can’t do everything in life.”
Raveena rose to fame withPatthar Ke Phoolin 1994 and went on to star in blockbuster films such asDilwale,Mohra,Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi,Bade Miyan Chote Miyan,Dulhe Raja, andAnari No 1.
