In a significant development for Odisha’s rail infrastructure, Indian Railways has cleared the final location survey for establishing a coach maintenance facility at Golanthara, located approximately 10 km from Berhampur station in Ganjam district.
The Railway Board’s approval for the survey marks an important step towards setting up a dedicated maintenance unit that is expected to enhance operational efficiency and expand rail services in southern Odisha.
Once operational, the proposed facility will function as a satellite coaching depot. It is expected to reduce congestion at the Berhampur yard and create additional space for smoother train movement.
Officials believe the new depot will enable more trains to originate and terminate at Berhampur station, thereby increasing its strategic importance in regional rail operations. The initiative is being viewed as a long-term measure to strengthen railway infrastructure and operational capacity in the region.
Decongestion of Berhampur yard
Introduction of more originating and terminating trains
Improved maintenance standards ensuring enhanced passenger safety
Faster rake turnaround and improved punctuality
Reduction in unnecessary empty rake movements
Local residents have expressed optimism, stating that the facility will not only improve railway services but also spur development around the station area.
