Ahead of Makar Sankranti, Puri Police have launched a citywide enforcement drive to curb the sale and use of manja, the sharp, glass-coated kite string that poses serious risks to public safety.
Kite-flying is a popular festival tradition in Odisha, but manja has been linked to accidents and injuries, particularly in crowded areas. With Puri expecting a massive influx of devotees and tourists during the festive period, authorities have stepped up security to ensure safety in key areas such as Bada Danda and around Jagannath Dham, where footfall reaches lakhs daily.
As part of the operation, police inspected kite shops and commercial outlets across the city, seizing 70 bundles of manja. Shopkeepers and individuals found selling the banned thread were issued strict warnings, with authorities cautioning that repeat offenders will face stringent legal action.
Puri Police have reiterated that the sale and use of manja is both hazardous and punishable under law, urging citizens and visitors to avoid flying kites with it, especially in crowded areas. The enforcement drive will continue in the coming days to ensure a safe and accident-free Makar Sankranti for residents, devotees, and tourists alike.
