Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated, dedicated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth about ₹5,650 crore in Tamil Nadu during a visit to Tiruchirappalli (Trichy). The projects focus on strengthening infrastructure, expanding clean energy access, improving rail and road connectivity, and creating employment opportunities for the youth.
During the event, the Prime Minister flagged off two Amrit Bharat Express trains — the Nagercoil–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express and the Podanur (Coimbatore)–Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express. He also launched the Rameswaram–Mangaluru Express, the Tirunelveli–Mangaluru Express and a new train service connecting Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur and Karaikkudi, improving connectivity between Tamil Nadu and states like Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.
Modi also laid the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s City Gas Distribution Network project in the Nilgiris and Erode districts, with an investment of over ₹3,680 crore. The project will provide piped natural gas connections to around 8.8 lakh households, supply gas to over 200 commercial establishments and set up more than 201 CNG stations.
In addition, the Prime Minister dedicated to the nation the Indian Oil Corporation Limited Lube Plant at Manali in Chennai, built at a cost of ₹1,490 crore. With a production capacity of 672 thousand metric tonnes per annum, it is among the largest facilities of its kind in the world and will strengthen India’s lubricant manufacturing capacity while reducing imports.
He also inaugurated 89 rural road projects covering 370 km under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, which are expected to improve connectivity to schools, markets and healthcare facilities in rural areas. A greenfield bypass project near the UNESCO-recognised Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple on NH-81 was also launched to improve road safety and ease traffic near the historic site.
The Prime Minister said the projects would significantly boost connectivity, promote tourism, support industries and generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the state.
