Orissa High Court Grants Interim Bail to Life Convict for Daughter’s Matric Exams

In a compassionate decision, the Orissa High Court granted interim bail to life convict Srinibas Patra, allowing him to support his daughter during her matriculation examinations until March 10.

In a gesture reflecting the humane dimension of the justice system, the Orissa High Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to a life convict so he could assist his daughter during her matriculation examinations.

Srinibas Patra, a resident of Alipingal village and currently lodged at the Jagatsinghpur District Sub-Jail, has been serving a life sentence for the past three years following his conviction in a criminal case. Despite his imprisonment, his role as a father remained central to his concerns.

This year marks a significant milestone for his daughter, who is appearing for her matriculation examinations. However, the examination centre is located nearly five kilometres from their home, making daily travel challenging. With no reliable support system available to escort her safely to and from the centre, the situation caused considerable distress to the family.

Seeking to stand by his daughter during this crucial academic phase, Srinibas approached the High Court requesting temporary bail. Taking a compassionate view, the court granted him interim bail until March 10, enabling him to accompany his daughter and provide emotional support during her exams.

The decision has drawn attention as an example of how the judicial system balances the enforcement of law with humanitarian considerations, particularly when it concerns a child’s education and well-being.

Expressing gratitude, Srinibas said he was thankful to the High Court for granting him 10 days of interim bail, noting that his daughter had been emotionally distressed in his absence.
