Police have arrested a man from the Kantiagada area of Rambha in Odisha’s Ganjam district for his alleged involvement in a major cyber fraud operation involving transactions worth more than ₹2 crore.
The accused, identified as Jyotiranjan Pradhan, was taken into custody during a police operation. Officials also seized a mobile phone from his possession, which is believed to contain crucial evidence related to illegal financial transactions.
According to police, Pradhan, along with two associates, allegedly opened between 50 and 70 bank accounts using the identities of economically vulnerable individuals. The accused reportedly lured people by promising them monthly financial benefits and convinced them to open bank accounts in their names.
After the accounts were opened, the accused allegedly collected the passbooks, ATM cards and cheque books from the account holders. These banking details were then reportedly handed over to cyber criminals, who used the accounts to conduct fraudulent transactions.
Preliminary investigations revealed that transactions worth over ₹2 crore were carried out through just 10 of these accounts. Police have so far traced more than 50 bank accounts linked to the fraud network.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said such accounts are often used by cyber criminals to store money obtained through scams, including cases involving threats of “digital arrest.” Criminals avoid transferring funds directly to their own accounts to evade detection, frequently switching between multiple accounts and banks.
Officials said the fraudulent transactions are connected to cybercrime cases reported across several states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Police added that the investigation is ongoing and several more accounts are currently under scrutiny.
