Air pollution levels in Odisha have reached alarming levels, with Talcher emerging as the most polluted city in the country, according to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) data. Several cities across the state have reported ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ air quality, underscoring a growing public health concern.
Talcher topped the national pollution chart with an AQI of 355, placing it firmly in the ‘severe’ category. Angul followed with an AQI of 329, while Baripada recorded 324. Major urban centres were also affected, with Cuttack registering an AQI of 304 and the state capital Bhubaneswar recording 302—both categorised as ‘very poor’.
Notably, four cities from Odisha feature among the six most polluted cities in the country, highlighting the extent of the pollution crisis in the state. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels can have serious health consequences, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.
Industrial emissions, coal-based activities, vehicular pollution, and unfavourable weather conditions are believed to be key contributors to the worsening air quality in the region. Authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and take necessary precautions.
The deteriorating air quality has once again brought attention to the urgent need for stricter pollution control measures, improved monitoring, and coordinated action to protect public health and the environment across Odisha.
