The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha has reached its final phase, with all preparatory work completed and a notable rise in the number of polling booths recorded across the state.

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha has entered its final phase, with all preparatory work completed and a sharp increase recorded in the number of polling booths across the state. Officials said the total number of polling stations has risen from around 36,000 to nearly 43,000 after the addition of about 7,000 new booths.

The expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen electoral infrastructure and ensure the smooth implementation of the revision exercise. Additional Chief Electoral Officer and Special Secretary Sushanta Kumar Mishra said groundwork for the SIR began nearly five months ago, with rationalisation and expansion of polling infrastructure identified as priority tasks.

Mishra confirmed that all Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been identified and appointed, and are already carrying out their responsibilities, adding that manpower readiness was a crucial part of the preparation.

He also noted that analysing and converting legacy electoral data, particularly from the 2002 revision, posed an initial challenge. However, the task was completed successfully during the preparatory phase. According to officials, work on polling centres was undertaken first, followed by a detailed review of older data to ensure accuracy and compliance with current norms.

Explaining the process further, Mishra said the SIR preparations had been underway for several months, during which extensive groundwork was completed. He highlighted that polling station rationalisation led to the addition of nearly 7,000 booths, taking the total close to 44,000, and that the appointment of BLOs and conversion of legacy data were among the key milestones achieved ahead of the final stage of the revision exercise.
