Novak Djokovic Targets Olympic Gold Defence at Los Angeles 2028 Despite Age Challenge

Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic has revealed that defending his Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is one of his major long-term goals. Despite being 38 years old and nearing the later stages of his career, the 24-time Grand Slam champion said he is motivated to compete in the Games and attempt to retain his title.

Djokovic achieved one of the biggest milestones of his career at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he won the gold medal after defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The victory was particularly significant for Djokovic, who described it as the greatest sporting achievement of his illustrious career.

Speaking to reporters after his second-round win against Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak at the Indian Wells tournament, Djokovic said the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics remains a key target. However, he acknowledged that reaching that stage will not be easy given his age and the physical demands of professional tennis.

Djokovic said that every year now feels longer than it did earlier in his career, but the possibility of competing in another Olympic Games continues to motivate him. If he manages to play in Los Angeles and defend his gold medal, Djokovic would become only the second male tennis player in history to achieve the feat.

British tennis star Andy Murray is currently the only man to have successfully defended an Olympic singles gold medal, winning consecutive titles at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. Djokovic previously won a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics before finally securing gold in Paris in 2024.

Meanwhile, Djokovic recently returned to action at Indian Wells after a five-week break following the Australian Open. In his comeback match, he overcame early difficulties and windy conditions to defeat Kamil Majchrzak 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Serbian star will next face American player Aleksandar Kovacevic in the third round. With his focus on both current tournaments and future ambitions like the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Djokovic has made it clear that he still has unfinished goals in his legendary tennis career.
