Patna: Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has formally joined the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), marking his official entry into state politics.
The 50-year-old leader joined the party at the JD(U) headquarters in Patna on Sunday. He received the party membership from JD(U) National Working President and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha.
The event was attended by several senior party leaders, including Union Minister Lalan Singh, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Chaudhary, and other JD(U) members and workers. However, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was not present during the induction ceremony.
Nishant Kumar had stayed away from active politics for many years. His entry into the party comes shortly after Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, leading to speculation about potential changes in Bihar’s political leadership.
As Nishant arrived at the party office, JD(U) supporters welcomed him with slogans such as “Yuva Soch, Majboot Sankalp”, highlighting hopes of a youth-driven political approach.
After joining the party, Nishant Kumar paid tribute to the statue of Jayaprakash Narayan located outside the JD(U) headquarters along with other party leaders.
Addressing party workers after joining JD(U), Nishant Kumar expressed gratitude to the leaders and supporters who attended the event.
He said he would work sincerely for the growth and success of the party.
“I will work as an active member and do my best for the benefit of the party,” Nishant Kumar said during his first speech as a JD(U) member.
He also expressed respect for his father’s decision to contest the Rajya Sabha elections.
Nishant Kumar’s entry into politics has triggered speculation in Bihar’s political circles about a possible leadership transition within JD(U).
Some reports suggest that he could be considered for the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar in the future.
JD(U) leader and senior MLA Hari Narayan Singh said discussions have taken place among party leaders regarding Nishant Kumar’s role in the government.
According to Singh, several senior leaders and legislators have expressed support for the possibility of Nishant taking on a major leadership position in the state administration.
However, no official announcement regarding any such appointment has been made so far.
