Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has secured his next franchise assignment soon after his abrupt exit from the Indian Premier League, with the left-arm pacer set to feature in the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League. His move comes amid wider discussions involving cricket boards and tournament organisers following his IPL release.
Mustafizur was released by Kolkata Knight Riders after the Board of Control for Cricket in India requested the franchise to terminate his contract, citing “developments all around”. KKR had acquired the Bangladesh international for Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL auction after a competitive bidding process, making the decision significant both in sporting and financial terms.
Shortly after the IPL exit, the Pakistan Super League confirmed via its official social media channels that Mustafizur would take part in the next edition of the tournament, even though the PSL player draft is scheduled for January 21. The upcoming season will mark his return to the league after eight years, having last represented Lahore Qalandars.
Mustafizur’s move to the PSL has coincided with uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. A planned virtual meeting between the International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board to address security concerns was postponed, leaving the situation unresolved.
The BCB has raised reservations about sending its team to India amid strained diplomatic relations and has formally requested that Bangladesh’s group-stage matches be shifted to Sri Lanka. As per the current schedule, Bangladesh are slated to play three matches in Kolkata, including fixtures against England and West Indies, along with a game against Nepal in Mumbai.
The ICC is understood to be evaluating several options, including relocating Bangladesh’s matches, facilitating a security assessment visit by BCB officials to India, or exploring alternative arrangements. While withdrawal from the tournament remains unlikely, uncertainty continues as discussions between the stakeholders remain ongoing.
