Security forces have launched a major offensive against a hardcore Maoist leader identified as Shukru in the forested regions of Kandhamal district, Odisha. The intensified operation comes amid intelligence reports suggesting that Shukru has emerged as a significant hurdle in the state’s ongoing anti-Maoist campaign.
According to sources, Shukru has allegedly been targeting Maoist cadres who are attempting to surrender and return to the mainstream. Instead of allowing them to lay down arms, he is accused of eliminating such members to prevent weakening of the outlawed outfit. The recent killing of a cadre named Anvesh inside the Kandhamal forests has further highlighted growing internal dissent within Maoist ranks.
Officials revealed that Shukru is currently operating in the Kandhamal region along with nearly 30 armed cadres. The group reportedly includes two senior members of the KKBN division and is believed to be attempting to regroup in strategically significant forest pockets.
In response to these developments, Odisha Police have prepared a special operational blueprint aimed at neutralising Shukru and dismantling his network. A large-scale combing operation has been underway since February 20, with security forces tightening cordons around suspected hideouts across dense forest areas.
Authorities are also deploying aerial surveillance through drones to monitor movements and track potential hideouts. Additionally, 13 new Special Operations Group (SOG) teams are being inducted into the operational zone to intensify search and combat efforts.
