Manoj Muntashir Rejects AR Rahman’s Claims of Communal Bias in Hindi Film Industry

Lyricist Manoj Muntashir has strongly disagreed with AR Rahman’s recent remarks suggesting communal prejudice and a power shift in the Hindi film industry, asserting that Bollywood remains inclusive and driven by talent rather than discrimination.

Lyricist and poet Manoj Muntashir has responded to AR Rahman’s recent comments about alleged communal prejudice and shifting power dynamics in the Hindi film industry, firmly rejecting the notion that discrimination defines the sector. Speaking to IANS, Muntashir said he does not believe the industry has undergone any such change in recent years or that opportunities are influenced by religious identity.

Addressing Rahman’s claim that his Hindi film work has slowed over the past eight years due to a “power shift” and “communal” politics, Muntashir cited India’s cultural and cinematic history as evidence to the contrary. He pointed out that some of the country’s biggest superstars—Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan—along with legendary poets and lyricists like Javed Akhtar, Sahir Ludhianvi and Majrooh Sultanpuri, reflect the industry’s long-standing inclusiveness.

Muntashir further highlighted film credits as a testament to diversity, noting that hundreds of professionals from different backgrounds contribute to every project. He challenged critics to identify any film where one religion has been favoured over others, maintaining that such bias does not exist. While emphasising his deep respect for Rahman, Muntashir clarified that disagreement does not imply disrespect and questioned the emphasis on the last eight years as a turning point.

The lyricist also referenced recent box-office successes such asPathaanandJawanto underline audience-driven acceptance of artists, regardless of background. He described the bond between Indian audiences and artists as one rooted in affection and accountability rather than prejudice, asserting that inclusivity is central to India’s cultural identity.

Rahman’s original remarks sparked widespread debate within the industry and beyond. In response to the controversy, the Oscar-winning composer later released a video clarifying his intent and expressing regret if his comments caused hurt.
