In a major anti-narcotics operation, Kalimela police seized a massive consignment of cannabis weighing approximately 1,250 kilograms from the Bhejangiwada forest under Kalimela police station limits in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Sunday. The seized ganja is estimated to be worth more than Rs 1 crore in the illegal market.
According to police sources, drug traffickers had concealed the consignment in the dense forest area with plans to transport it to other states. However, the smugglers fled the spot after noticing the approaching police team. The seizure followed specific intelligence inputs, prompting a special police team to conduct a targeted raid.
Although no arrests were made during the operation, police said investigations are underway to identify those involved and dismantle the wider smuggling network. Officials also revealed that illegal cannabis cultivation continues in the region, with plantations allegedly spread across nearly 1,000 acres. Authorities stressed that eradication of such plantations remains a top priority to curb narcotics trafficking at its source.
