Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan believes Shubman Gill has the potential to become the next Virat Kohli. Positioned as India’s rising all-format star, Gill has taken on the captaincy of both the Test and ODI teams. Following Kohli’s retirement from red-ball cricket, the 26-year-old has also assumed the iconic No. 4 spot in the Test side.
Reflecting on his own early days in international cricket, Pathan told JioStar that legendary Rahul Dravid had cautioned him at 19 that the challenges of the game would only grow tougher over time. Pathan suggested that Gill is now entering a similar phase, explaining that just as Kohli was once compared to Sachin Tendulkar, Gill is now being measured against Virat Kohli. Entrusting Gill with the Test and ODI captaincy, Pathan said, gives the young batsman an opportunity to mature and grow under greater responsibility.
“He (Gill) has a lot of talent. There will always be comparisons. Virat was compared with Sachin, and now Gill is being compared to Virat, who has scored 25,000–30,000 runs. I think he is fully capable of it. He has a fine range of shots. The more responsibility and challenges he gets, the more he will grow as a cricketer. I have seen that he is always ready for cricket,” Pathan said.
Pathan’s endorsement comes after former England spinner Monty Panesar expressed doubts about whether Gill could fill Kohli’s shoes. While Gill remains part of the T20I setup, he did not make India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Despite taking on ODI captaincy, Gill said his relationship with senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remains unchanged.
“The narrative outside may be different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful. Whatever they feel—their experience, reading the pitch, or handling any situation—I go to them and ask for their input. I then make decisions based on my understanding of the game,” Gill explained.
Ahead of India’s upcoming New Zealand series, the ODI captain is set to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, continuing his preparation and leadership role in the team.
