India's selectors are expected to announce the ODI squad for the three-match series against New Zealand, beginning January 11, with fitness updates playing a decisive role in the final call. While several senior players have returned to domestic cricket in line with the BCCI’s match-readiness directive, not all have received the medical green signal.
ODI captain Shubman Gill has been declared fully fit and is firmly in contention for selection. A majority of India’s core group — including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel — have also been cleared by the medical team.
However, senior pacer Mohammed Shami remains a concern. Despite featuring in domestic cricket and showing encouraging signs, he has reportedly not been given full medical clearance, making his inclusion in the New Zealand series doubtful.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya is another player under close watch. While fit enough to play, his bowling workload in 50-over cricket is being carefully managed. With the T20 World Cup approaching, the team management is reluctant to rush him into a heavy ODI workload.
Meanwhile, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is nearing the end of his rehabilitation following an injury sustained during the Australia tour. He cleared his first return-to-play test on January 2 and is scheduled to feature in another domestic match on January 6. His selection will depend on final medical clearance after that game.
With the squad announcement imminent, selectors are closely tracking these developments as they look to strike the right balance between fitness, form and workload management ahead of the New Zealand challenge.
