Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran is carefully preserving its diplomatic relationship with India despite New Delhi’s growing ties with the United States and Israel. Recent talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi highlight how both countries are maintaining dialogue and cooperation even during regional instability.
Tehran has deliberately avoided harsh criticism of India, recognising New Delhi’s policy of strategic balance and non-alignment. Iran sees India as an important economic and diplomatic partner due to its large energy market, influence in global forums, and role in regional connectivity projects such as the Chabahar Port.
For India, maintaining engagement with Iran remains vital for energy security, access to Central Asia through strategic trade routes, and the safety of millions of Indians living in the Gulf region. The relationship is also rooted in centuries-old cultural ties and decades of diplomatic cooperation.
As geopolitical tensions rise in West Asia, both countries are prioritising pragmatic diplomacy. By maintaining communication and avoiding confrontational rhetoric, Iran and India aim to protect long-term strategic interests while contributing to regional stability.
