India’s air defence is set for a major boost with Russia confirming the delivery of the fourth S-400 long-range air defence squadron by May 2026, while the fifth and final unit is expected in 2027. The delivery coincides with the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, which showcased the S-400’s operational effectiveness in India’s multi-layered air defence network.
Currently, three squadrons are operational, deployed across India’s western and northern fronts. The fourth squadron will enhance readiness against evolving threats, while missile replenishments and follow-on supplies are underway to maintain full operational strength.
India signed a deal for five S-400 regimental sets in October 2018 for around Rs 40,000 crore. Each squadron includes command-and-control centres, long-range surveillance and engagement radars, mobile launchers, and multiple missile types capable of tracking and engaging aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and drones at ranges up to 400 km.
These deployments, including in Punjab, the Siliguri Corridor, Pathankot, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, have strengthened India’s ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ multi-tier air defence system, ensuring credible deterrence and strategic security. With the fourth squadron arriving next year and the fifth by 2027, India is moving closer to near-complete operational capability of its S-400 shield.
