The Income Tax Department continued its search operations for the second consecutive day on Monday in connection with alleged tax evasion by restaurateur Abhay Nayak. The raids, which began on Sunday, are being carried out at multiple locations across Bhubaneswar, Puri and Cuttack.
According to reports, around 15 Income Tax teams conducted coordinated searches at six locations linked to Nayak’s restaurant business network. The searches include his residence in Raghunathpur in Bhubaneswar as well as several restaurants operating in the three cities.
The establishments under investigation include Mysore Express in Patia, Tandooriwala, Express Lounge in Chandrasekharpur, Sky Lounge, Express Lounge in Puri and Spice Village in Cuttack.
Officials are examining financial records and other documents as part of the investigation. Authorities are also closely scrutinising transactions linked to the PetPooja restaurant management app after receiving intelligence inputs suggesting that crores of rupees in taxes may have been evaded through transactions carried out using the application.
Based on these inputs, the Income Tax Department reportedly kept the restaurant chain and its digital transactions under surveillance before launching the raids.
Preliminary findings indicate that the restaurant chain allegedly showed losses in official records while encouraging customers to make cash payments. Investigators suspect that the actual income generated by the businesses may not have been properly disclosed.
During the search operations, officials reportedly seized cash and several important documents. Authorities have also found evidence suggesting that the restaurant chain and the app may have been used over several years to evade taxes.
Further examination of the seized documents and financial records is currently underway as the investigation continues.
