A political controversy erupted in Maharashtra after Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal’s remarks referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan triggered strong reactions. Sapkal later issued a public apology, saying his comments were misinterpreted and circulated in a misleading manner.

Sapkal explained that his statement was made while promoting national unity and suggesting that portraits of national icons be displayed together in government offices. He clarified that he did not compare Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan and emphasised that Shivaji Maharaj remains his greatest inspiration.

The controversy intensified after an FIR was registered against him in Pune, and political opponents criticised his remarks. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also condemned the statement, saying any insult to Shivaji Maharaj would not be tolerated.

Sapkal accused political rivals of distorting his speech to create social tension and said historical discussions should be handled responsibly without dividing society. The incident has added to ongoing political tensions in the state.
