What began as a private family celebration at Hansraj College has escalated into a campus-wide controversy. The wedding of the principal’s son on February 10, 2026, involved the use of college lawns, hostel spaces, and recreational areas, disrupting student routines and even leading to the cancellation of the annual "Khelo Hansraj" sports tournament. Photos and e-invitations circulating on social media intensified student anger, prompting protests led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).

While Delhi University officials maintain that no rules were broken, the episode has sparked wider debates about the balance between administrative discretion and student rights. Faculty members caution that allowing private events in public spaces could set a dangerous precedent, raising questions about transparency, consent, and the proper use of publicly funded institutions. The incident underscores the need for formalized guidelines to prevent personal celebrations from interfering with academic life while preserving campus governance integrity.
