Grok AI obscene content row: Govt seeks details from X on action taken

The government has sought additional details from X regarding the specific action taken against obscene content linked to its AI chatbot Grok, as well as measures to prevent such incidents in the future, sources said on Wednesday. They added that the response submitted by the platform, though detailed, was found to be inadequate.

The move follows submissions made by the Elon Musk-owned social media platform to the IT Ministry in response to the Centre’s directive to curb the misuse of the Grok AI chatbot for generating sexualised and obscene images of women.

Sources said the IT Ministry has asked X to clearly outline the remedial steps taken to address the issue and the safeguards being put in place to prevent a recurrence. The company was earlier granted extended time until Wednesday, 5 pm, to submit an action taken report after receiving a stern warning over the generation of indecent and sexually explicit content through AI-based services such as Grok.

According to sources, X stated in its reply that it respects Indian laws and guidelines and considers India a key market. The platform also highlighted its content moderation and takedown policies related to misleading information and non-consensual sexualised content.

However, officials noted that while the response was comprehensive in scope, it failed to provide crucial specifics, particularly on concrete actions taken to address the Grok-related obscene content issue.
