With nearly 145 deaths in sleeper bus accidents over the past four months, the Indian government has taken a firm stance on safety violations, warning operators and manufacturers that repeat offenders will face licence cancellations and bans from road operations.
Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Secretary V Umashankar highlighted systemic failures across bus manufacturing, fitness testing, and enforcement. The Ministry is now tightening regulations, including mandating that buses be built only by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and implementing automated fitness testing to prevent unsafe modifications. Authorities will also enforce strict compliance through regular inspections and roadside checks, ensuring passenger safety remains uncompromised.
The new Bus Body Code, effective from October 1, 2025, requires all newly registered buses to meet stricter design and safety standards, addressing risks like fire hazards. The government is emphasizing continuous monitoring, stating that any operator or manufacturer violating norms will face severe consequences to prevent further tragedies.
