India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand has once again sparked debate, with several former cricketers questioning certain selection calls. Soon after the BCCI announced the 15-member squad, discussions around key inclusions and omissions began to dominate cricketing circles.
With limited places available, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has come under scrutiny for overlooking consistent performers while backing players with limited exposure at the international level. One decision that has drawn significant criticism is the selection of Nitish Kumar Reddy as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
Former India batter and ex-CSK player Subramaniam Badrinath openly questioned Reddy’s inclusion, stating that his performances with the ball do not justify a spot in the ODI setup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath pointed out that with established all-rounders such as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar already part of the squad, Reddy’s selection raises valid concerns.
Badrinath highlighted that Reddy has played only two ODIs so far, scoring just 27 runs and failing to take a wicket. He also noted that even in domestic cricket, the Andhra Pradesh all-rounder has struggled to control the flow of runs with the ball.
Despite being named in the squad, Reddy may not be assured of a place in the playing XI, with Jadeja expected to take up the primary all-rounder’s role. Badrinath felt this made the decision even more puzzling, especially as it came at the expense of in-form batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.
According to Badrinath, Gaikwad’s omission is difficult to justify given his outstanding List A record and recent form. He recalled how Gaikwad was asked to bat at No. 4 during the South Africa series due to a shortage of opening slots and still responded with a century. Since then, the Maharashtra batter has continued his prolific run in List A cricket with remarkable consistency.
Badrinath emphasised that Gaikwad’s statistics speak for themselves, pointing to his List A average of over 57 and more than 5,000 runs, including multiple centuries. In his view, leaving out a batter of such calibre in favour of an all-rounder with limited impact reflects inconsistency in the selection approach.
While acknowledging that most selections were predictable and reasonable, Badrinath maintained that choosing Nitish Kumar Reddy ahead of Ruturaj Gaikwad remains the biggest talking point and a decision that deserves closer examination.
