A tragic wildlife incident has come to light in Dhenkanal district of Odisha, where a female elephant died after reportedly consuming explosive-laced bait that had allegedly been placed to trap wild boars.
According to reports, the incident occurred in a forest near Pipala village under the Jiral Forest Section. Local residents discovered the carcass of the elephant in the forest area, raising alarm among authorities and wildlife officials.
Sources said the explosive bait had allegedly been set up by hunters to trap wild boars. However, the female elephant is believed to have accidentally consumed the explosive substance.
The explosion reportedly caused severe internal injuries to the animal, leading to a gradual deterioration in its health.
Following the incident, officials from the Odisha Forest Department tranquilised the injured elephant and began treatment in the Sunajhari Reserve Forest under the Kamakhyanagar Western Range.
Veterinary teams monitored the animal and attempted to stabilise its condition.
Despite treatment, the elephant’s health reportedly worsened over time, ultimately leading to its death on Tuesday.
The incident has triggered outrage among wildlife activists and local residents. Allegations have also surfaced claiming that the elephant may have died due to negligence and inadequate medical care during the treatment process.
Activists have demanded a detailed investigation into the matter and strict action against those responsible for placing explosive traps in forest areas.
Environmentalists have expressed concern over the continued use of explosive-laced bait in forest areas to hunt wild animals, calling it a dangerous and illegal practice that threatens wildlife.
They have urged authorities to strengthen monitoring in forest regions and take stringent measures against poaching and illegal hunting to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
