Ashes: Ben Stokes Warns England to Put Team First Ahead of Final Sydney Test

England captain Ben Stokes has delivered a blunt message to his squad ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, urging players to set aside personal ambitions and focus solely on what benefits the team as England look to end a difficult tour on a positive note.

With the Ashes already decided following England’s defeats in the first three Tests, Ben Stokes has called for unity and selflessness within the squad before the series finale in Sydney. England can at best reduce the margin of defeat to 3–2, but Stokes stressed that mindset and collective responsibility remain crucial.

“There shouldn’t be any reason for anyone to get individual or insular about what they want to do this week,” Stokes said ahead of the match. “As soon as someone starts thinking about their own performances, it becomes quite easy to see through.”

The England captain said fostering a team-first culture has been central to his leadership. According to Stokes, every decision taken on and off the field in the final Test must be guided by what the team needs, rather than personal milestones or selection concerns.

England are yet to confirm their playing XI, with selection debates focusing on whether to include specialist spinner Shoaib Bashir or all-rounder Will Jacks, especially with pitch conditions at the SCG under scrutiny. The squad has also been impacted by injury, with Gus Atkinson ruled out and Matthew Potts added to the group.

Stokes acknowledged the uncertainty around the surface in Sydney, joking about how even experienced players and staff struggle to predict conditions. Despite the series result being out of reach, he insisted motivation remains high.

“Although we can’t get the thing we came here for, we’ve still got the chance to go out there and win a game of cricket for England,” he said.

The Sydney Test also carries added significance as it marks the final international appearance of Australian opener Usman Khawaja. While England look ahead to lessons from the tour later, Stokes was clear that reflection can wait.

“Right now isn’t the time for that,” he said. “We’ve got a big Test to play here.”
