The Election Commission of India has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Puducherry, Goa, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan, and West Bengal to January 19, 2026. The extension, notified on Thursday, follows requests from the Chief Electoral Officers of the affected states and UTs to ensure maximum voter inclusion.
The SIR exercise, originally scheduled with January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, allows voters additional time to verify details, apply for inclusion through Form 6, or raise objections to inaccuracies. This nationwide revision aims to update electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections by including all eligible citizens and removing ineligible entries due to migration, deaths, duplication, or other errors.
Separately, before the Supreme Court, the Election Commission clarified that its authority is limited to voter registration and does not extend to determining citizenship, deportation, or visa status, emphasizing its role strictly in the electoral process.
