Private unaided schools across Delhi have released the second merit list for nursery admissions for the 2026–27 academic session, offering renewed hope to parents whose children were placed on waiting lists in the first round. With demand far outstripping supply, the final round of admissions is scheduled to take place on March 5.
More than 1,700 private unaided schools published their second selection and waiting lists on February 9, underscoring the intense competition for limited nursery seats in the capital. Education officials noted that large waiting lists indicate that many admissions may only be finalised during the last round of the process.
Parents and guardians of shortlisted candidates must visit the respective schools between February 10 and February 16 to complete admission formalities. Schools have cautioned that failure to report within the stipulated timeline could lead to forfeiture of the allotted seat.
Several prominent schools reported sizeable shortlists and long waiting lists. Sovereign School in Rohini shortlisted over 400 candidates, while Gita Ratan School selected more than 130 students. St George’s School in Alaknanda confirmed 155 admissions, whereas Loreto Convent School in Delhi Cantonment shortlisted 11 candidates. Delhi Public School, East of Kailash, and Apeejay School, Saket, also reported high numbers of waitlisted applicants, reflecting the scale of demand.
According to the revised admission framework issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), the foundational stage now includes nursery, kindergarten (KG), and Class 1. For the 2026–27 academic year, children must be at least three years old for nursery, four years for KG, and five years for Class 1 as of March 31, 2026. Schools may allow an age relaxation of up to one month at the discretion of the school head.
Admissions are being processed through a points-based system that takes into account neighbourhood distance, sibling preference, and alumni status. Applicant data was shared in early January, followed by the disclosure of point allocations.
The nursery admission process will conclude on March 19. To ensure transparency and adherence to norms, the DoE has set up district-level monitoring cells to address grievances. Any draw of lots, if required, must be conducted transparently in the presence of parents and be video recorded. Schools are permitted to charge only a non-refundable registration fee of Rs 25 and are prohibited from demanding capitation fees or forcing parents to purchase prospectuses.
