Farmers in the Dharakote area of Odisha’s Ganjam district are facing severe hardship due to delays in the issuance of tokens for paddy procurement, forcing them to spend cold winter nights guarding their harvested crops. Although the local procurement mandi opened on December 23, the absence of tokens has stalled procurement, leaving large quantities of paddy stranded at threshing yards.
With no immediate arrangement to transport their produce to procurement centres and a lack of secure storage facilities, farmers are compelled to keep their harvest in the open. Fearing losses due to moisture, rodents, or theft, many cultivators have set up temporary shelters in the fields and are keeping round-the-clock vigil over their crops.
As winter conditions intensify, the situation has become increasingly difficult. Farmers say they are enduring biting cold, dew, and sleepless nights to protect their year-long effort. One farmer said that transporting such large quantities of paddy back home was not feasible due to the risk of rodent damage, leaving them with no option but to stay in the fields.
Apart from harsh weather, farmers are also facing threats from wildlife and theft. Wild animals frequently pass through the area, adding to their anxiety. Farmers reported sightings of elephants and regular movement of wild boars near the threshing yards, forcing them to take turns staying awake at night to keep watch.
Expressing frustration, farmers have urged the administration to resolve the token issue at the earliest so that procurement can begin without further delay. Many said they are being repeatedly told that tokens will be issued “tomorrow,” but the dates keep getting postponed.
Until procurement starts in full swing, farmers in the region say they have no option but to continue guarding their paddy under harsh conditions, hoping for swift administrative action to prevent further hardship and potential losses.
