Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday flagged what he described as a disturbing rise in “white-collar terrorism”, cautioning that higher education without moral grounding can pose serious risks to society.
Speaking at the 104th foundation day of Bhupal Nobles’ University in Udaipur, Singh cited the November 10 car bomb blast near Delhi’s Red Fort to underline his concern. He pointed out that the accused in the attack were qualified doctors, demonstrating that education alone does not guarantee ethical behaviour.
“Today, an alarming trend of white-collar terrorism is emerging in the country. Highly educated people are working against society and the nation. The perpetrators of the Delhi bomb blast were doctors—those who had a degree in hand and RDX in their pockets,” Singh said, stressing that knowledge must be accompanied by values, character, and a sense of responsibility.
The blast involved an explosives-laden car driven by Dr Umar-un-Nabi, resulting in the deaths of 15 people. Investigators later uncovered a white-collar terror module, leading to the arrest of three doctors—Muzammil Ganai, Adeel Rather, and Shaheena Saeed— among others.
Singh emphasised that the true purpose of education goes beyond professional success. “Education must develop morality, ethics, humility, and character. Any system that imparts knowledge without these values is incomplete,” he said.
Clarifying his view on religion, the Defence Minister noted that it should not be limited to places of worship. “Religion is a sense of duty. Education without morality and a sense of righteousness may not serve society—and at times can even prove fatal,” he added.
The minister also touched upon India’s broader growth story, stating that the country is currently the world’s fourth-largest economy and is on track to become the third-largest by 2030. He said universities and educational institutions have a crucial role to play in shaping not just skilled professionals, but responsible citizens.
