How Chronic Stress Weakens the Immune System and Makes You Sick

Chronic stress does more than affect mental health—it directly weakens the immune system. Prolonged exposure to stress hormones like cortisol can reduce the body’s ability to fight infections, slow recovery, and worsen existing health conditions, experts warn.

Stress is often viewed as a mental health concern, but its impact extends throughout the body. When stress becomes chronic, it triggers continuous release of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. While helpful in short bursts, long-term exposure suppresses immune function, increases inflammation, and reduces the effectiveness of white blood cells.

Immunology researcher Dr. Aaron Malik explains that people under prolonged stress are more vulnerable to infections like colds and flu, experience slower wound healing, and may see existing conditions such as asthma or autoimmune disorders worsen. Poor sleep, often caused by stress, further weakens immune responses by reducing antibody production.

Experts recommend prioritising sleep, physical activity, stress-management practices, social connection, and a nutrient-rich diet to protect immunity. Persistent stress that disrupts sleep, mood, or physical health should be addressed early, as long-term immune suppression can lead to serious health consequences.
