Odisha’s Chilika turns birdwatchers’ paradise as over 11 lakh migratory birds arrive

Chilika Lake in Odisha has once again transformed into a winter haven for migratory birds, with over 11 lakh winged visitors arriving this season. The annual influx has drawn birdwatchers and tourists from across the country to Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, highlighting its rich biodiversity and conservation success.

Chilika Lake in Odisha has once again become a haven for migratory birds with the onset of winter, attracting birdwatchers and tourists from across the country. As temperatures drop, thousands of migratory birds have begun arriving at Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, marking the start of the annual migratory season.

According to Amlan Nayak, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Chilika Wildlife Division, the migratory bird season at Chilika typically begins in October and continues till March. During this period, birds congregate at multiple locations across the vast wetland, with Nalabana Bird Sanctuary and Mangalajodi emerging as the most popular destinations for bird enthusiasts.

“In the recent bird estimation, we recorded around 11.27 lakh migratory birds across different parts of Chilika,” Nayak said, underscoring the ecological significance of the wetland. He added that to ensure protection and effective monitoring, 21 bird protection camps have been set up around the lake during the migratory season.

The Forest Department has also stepped up conservation and awareness efforts. Regular awareness programmes are being organised for schoolchildren and local communities to highlight the importance of migratory birds and wetland conservation. Special meetings are held at vulnerable locations, along with round-the-clock patrolling to prevent illegal activities.

“These sustained efforts have significantly helped in curbing poaching in the Chilika region,” the DFO said.

With favourable climatic conditions and abundant food resources, Chilika continues to be one of India’s most important wintering grounds for migratory birds. The seasonal influx not only boosts eco-tourism but also reinforces the need for continued conservation of this globally significant wetland.
