India’s Automobile Retail Sales Grow 7.71% in CY25, Cross 2.81 Crore Units

India’s automobile retail sector registered a strong performance in the calendar year 2025, with total retail sales surpassing2.81 crore units, marking a7.71% year-on-year (YoY) growth, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

FADA PresidentC.S. Vigneshwardescribed the year as a tale of two halves. “India’s auto retail segment closed CY25 with total retails at 2,81,61,228 units, reflecting a 7.71% YoY growth,” he said. “The first eight months—from January to August—remained relatively subdued despite favorable macroeconomic support such as direct tax relief in the Union Budget and cumulative interest rate easing by the Reserve Bank of India through 2025. During this period, customers were value-conscious, and financiers were selective in approving loans, resulting in uneven retail conversions across different markets.”

The latter half of the year, however, witnessed a clear revival in demand, with improved liquidity, easier financing conditions, and renewed consumer confidence boosting sales across segments.

Category-wise Performance

Breaking down the performance by vehicle segments,two-wheelers (2W)recorded a7.24% growth, reflecting sustained demand in both metro and tier-2/3 markets.Passenger vehicles (PV)witnessed a stronger uptick, rising9.70%, driven by increasing preference for compact SUVs, utility vehicles, and value-for-money sedans.Commercial vehicles (CV)expanded6.71%, as fleet operators resumed operations and infrastructure projects gained momentum. Meanwhile,tractorsled the growth charts with an11.52% increase, fueled by strong rural demand and favorable crop prospects across several regions.

Insights and Industry Trends

Analysts note that the year’s performance highlights the resilience of India’s auto market amid global uncertainties. Early-year caution among consumers, coupled with selective lending by financiers, slowed sales during the first half. However, the second half benefited from improved affordability, rising disposable incomes, and attractive offers from manufacturers and dealerships.

FADA’s data also underlines a gradual recovery in urban demand, as well as robust growth in rural and semi-urban markets, particularly for two-wheelers and tractors. Experts believe that continued focus on electrification, digital retailing, and innovative financing solutions could further sustain growth in the coming year.

Overall,CY25’s 7.71% YoY growth in auto retail sales, along with strong performance in key categories, signals that the sector is steadily recovering, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in a challenging macroeconomic environment.
