Former West Indies star Dwayne Bravo opened up about his close bond with MS Dhoni, calling the former India captain a “brother from another mother” and crediting him for some of the most memorable years of his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Bravo emphasized that Dhoni’s leadership style, marked by trust and simplicity, allowed him to thrive on the field.
In a recent interaction, Bravo highlighted how Dhoni’s approach as captain was refreshingly straightforward. Rather than micromanaging players, Dhoni encouraged them to focus on their core strengths and stay true to their roles. Recalling one instance, Bravo said Dhoni advised him not to dive aggressively in the field, explaining that his primary contribution as a bowler mattered more than a few saved runs. This clarity helped Bravo adjust his approach and play with confidence.
Bravo also described how Dhoni’s faith in him became apparent early in matches. After a quick discussion about his preferred field placements during his first over, Dhoni never intervened again, allowing Bravo the freedom to perform without pressure. He praised the culture Dhoni and head coach Stephen Fleming fostered at CSK, where players were treated equally regardless of form, without fear of criticism or mood swings from the management.
Bravo represented CSK in two phases—2011 to 2015 and 2018 to 2022—and was part of four IPL title-winning campaigns under Dhoni (2011, 2018, 2021, 2022). Even after retiring, he remained connected to the franchise, taking up the role of bowling coach during the 2023 IPL season, cementing his enduring relationship with both Dhoni and CSK.
