Bhubaneswar Man Poses as Doctor on Matrimonial Site, Cheats Woman of ₹22 Lakh

In Bhubaneswar, a man pretending to be a doctor was arrested for defrauding a woman of ₹22 lakh through a fake matrimonial profile and false marriage promises.

A man posing as a doctor was arrested by Pahala police on Thursday for allegedly cheating a woman of ₹22 lakh through a fake matrimonial profile in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The accused reportedly created a fake doctor’s identity to gain the victim’s trust and made false promises of marriage, even referencing his supposed younger brother to reinforce his claims.

Police said the woman was persuaded to transfer large sums of money over time, citing marriage-related expenses and investments in bank policies. After realizing she had been defrauded, she approached authorities, leading to the registration of a case.

The accused was arrested and produced before court. Investigations suggest he may have targeted several women in a similar manner, maintaining multiple fake relationships while claiming to be a doctor.

Authorities have raised concerns over the growing number of matrimonial scams, warning women and families to verify credentials before engaging with potential suitors. Similar incidents in 2025 involved individuals posing as doctors, Dubai-based managers, industrialists, or hoteliers to defraud women on matrimonial platforms.
